Who can do it?

Not every director is capable of mounting a successful management buy-in. And the banks and others who provide funding reject many unsuitable candidates. Restructuring in industry has led to thousands of directors taking pay-offs and going into retirement much earlier than they would have planned.

You need experience and you need to show you are capable of high achievement. Merely having attained senior management positions is not good enough. Relevant sector knowledge is important - if you're planning to buy a foods company and all your experience is in logistics, you might struggle to convince a backer that you're the person for the role.

What do I need to mount an MBI?

1. Relevant experience at Managing Director or Finance Director level.

2. An ability to generate increased profits in a business.

3. Relevant sector experience

4. Excellent negotiating skills.

5. Strong financial skills.

6. Financial Resources (typically between ₤25,000 and ₤250,000).

7. Sound commercial judgement and vision.
